Shigeru Miyamoto Confirms Nintendo is working on a new console

VGChartz is reporting that Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that Nintendo is working on a new platform. There is no word on whether it is a hand held or a console.

But if it were a console it would be the first 8th generation console to be announce.  I am assuming it will be a console (probably called the Wii2). Like i said in an earlier post Nintendo for the last 4 generation has released a new console every 5 years near the end of the year. Which would be a November 2011 launch for the wii2, which mean it would be a great time to announce it at GDC or E3 this year.

It’s a handheld called the ‘Nintendo 3DS’, capable of performing games in a 3D format without the need for any special eye wear. It is compatible with all original DS titles, even though it’s a new platform from the DS line. Itsw finna be da shyt, nigga!!!!!!!!!

Bad theory. The reason Nintendo was releasing a new console every 5 years is the same reason that every other developer was releasing consoles with a semi-steady pace; because technology was making those huge leaps and bounds every year. What was new 5 months ago was ancient today.

That’s no longer the case, we no longer need to upgrade our computers two to three times a year, we can update them annually or every two years and still be capable of running all the bleeding edge games with a considerable amount of performance.

Consoles did away with fixed function hardware this generation of hardware, and we as the consumers benefit from longer hardware life because now the hardware itself can be extended to do more through firmware updates. We can extend the life of the console itself through shaders and firmware, and thus the wii (unlike its predecessor the gamecube) can handle new design functions that weren’t even thought of when it was first released. Though the wii uses a less powerful graphics processor, it’s still capable of very good visual fidelity.

Your theory that someone is going to jump start the 8th generation of console hardware in November is unfounded, and frankly, they couldn’t just launch hardware without saying something about it. You don’t launch a new console tomorrow without sufficient coverage of it today, because if you did, no one would know about it and it wouldn’t sell all that well.

  • Moore’s Law still applies to hardware. That the number of transistors a chip doubles every 18-24 months. The advance in hardware in just 5 years are huge. 10 years is astronomical.

A brand new iphone today, is more powerful than a 10 year old mac. Just look at the stats.

    2000
    iMac
Operating System – Mac OS 9.0.4
    Processor – 500 MHz PowerPC G3 CPU, 128MB Memory
Graphics – ATI Rage 128 Pro, 8MB of memory (8 million triangles)
    Screen – 786K pixels
    Data Transfer Speeds – 1.3-12.5 MB/s (DVD-ROM-1/100 Ethernet)
    Storage – 30GB Hard Drive
    Dimensions – 15.0 x 15.0 x 17.1 inches
    Weight – 34.7 pounds

    2010
    iPhone 4
    Operating System – iOS 4.0
    Processor – 1 Ghz ARM A4 CPU, 512MB Memory
Graphics – PowerVR SGX 535, uses system memory (28 million triangles)
    Screen – 614K pixels
    Data Transfer Speeds – .04-20MB/s (3G-WiFi)
    Storage – 32GB Flash Drive
    Dimensions – 4.5 x 2.31 x .31 inches
    Weight – 4.8 ounces

Hell the the iphone 4 is more powerful than the Wii. Here is the Wii tech specs… Firmware update can’t bump the processor up to 1gb, or give it HD ability. That what new hardware is for.

729 MHz IBM PowerPC “Broadway” CPU
    24MBs “main” 1T-SRAM
    512MBs internal flash memory
    Built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi capability
    AV multi-port: S-video, composite, component
    Four GameCube controller ports
    Two USB 2.0 ports
    Self-loading media drive
