How to Write a Sales Parser — Part 1: Intoduction and Planing

One of the nice things about being a Software Engineer is that I can write program that are helpful to get task done. For games a ton of different tools can be created that can help game play. Things like EQ2maps, UI interfaces, Advanced Combat Tracker, even my Everquest 2 map all have some code in them.

So what I am planning to do here will be give step by step (or at least try to) on how to write a sales parser, for Everquest 2. My plan is also to let this kind of be an open source project. So I will be using Assembla.com for this (I got the name parse). And I think I have it set for anyone to join, but the code will be view able there.

I plan to write this is in Java. Why java. 1 I like java more than any other languages. 2 I spend 8 hours a day going over C and C++ code, and don’t want to spend more time looking at C.

So the first step is… WTF do we want the sales parser to do. There is the simple aspect to it. Parse the data and show people how much they sold. But a parse that did just that is useless.

I want to build a parser that show you how much you make over time total, for a certain item, for a certain category of item.

I want to make a parser that helpful for tradeskilers. So they can enter only the items they want to track, they can enter how much fuel cost and find out the total amount of profit they make of each item, So they can see which items make more money for less cost.

So next week I’m going to write and put up the start of the program and explain it, and what it dose.

  • Sounds like a great idea. And I am looking forward to how it turns out.

  • I really would like to see this project progress and will keep an eye on the Assembla page. I myself would love to see how prices for different items develop. At the time i keep track of valuable Recipes and L&L manualy which costs a lot of time.

i have experiences in c++, c and java and maybe could give you hand with this.
