Earth Hour was today, and i’ve seen this great idea on how to use less power and less water that i think all new building/house should have to follow.
The idea is that every new building has to have a greywater tank. Greywater is not freshwater but it is also not blackwater (toilet, sewage water). You wouldn’t drink or bath in Greywater but it can be used as toilet water, and to water plants. Do you really need a gallon of fresh water to flush your toilet, No!
Greywater tanks would be filled up with rain water, from the drainage from the roof of your house and from drainage pipes most lawn have now a days. What great about this is the drainage from your lawn will end up back in the greywater tank, so water is not waisted going down the street to a sewage drain.
On Average in a day 58% of the water you use is for outdoor use (water plants and stuff). http://www.aquacraft.com/Publications/resident.htm This would cut the average american water use from anywhere to 20 to 50%. That rather large.
On top of that since these greywater tanks are under ground the water is cold. And can be used to cool down houses in the summer with out having to use an air conditioning unit that draw a lot of power. In the winter since the water is under ground it not frozen and can be used to warm houses up when it below freezing, with out having to use a heater. Heating and cooling end up being more than 50% of your power bill, unless you live in an area that it doesn’t get to hot or cold (like here in the bay area).
You save any where from 20-50% of the water you use, and you can save any where from 10-60% on the power you use depending on where you live. And it rather cheep to do for new houses. Dig a hole, put a tank, and lay the pipes down.
